The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Okogie has condemned in strong terms brides who dressed indecently to the church on their wedding day, saying “we cannot close our eyes to the immodest way of dressing by brides and their bridesmaids on wedding days.”

Following this, Cardinal Okogie has ordered his parish priests and other Catholic women organisations to do all in their power to correct the anomaly and help to lead the church’s faithful nearer God.

Cardinal Okogie who disclosed this in the September 2009 edition of the Catholic Bulletin, lamented that while their grooms are well dressed in suit, the brides dress half naked to the church, asking “who is cheating who?”

The Archbishop said such immoral dressing may be responsible for the failure of such marriages these days.

Cardinal Okogie explained that the church has a duty to guide the faithful in their ways of life to ensure moral uprightness and social comportment, stressing, “our ban on immoral or seductive dressing by both men and women is one of the right steps taken in the right direction.”

He reiterated the stand of the church that any mode of dressing that exposes the body will be strongly condemned by the Lagos Archdiocese and the Catholic Church in general.

Meanwhile, Catholics are to devote September to Our Lady of Sorrows (Mary) for her guidance and intercession with her son, Jesus.

Commenting on this, Cardinal Okogie prayed, “may our Lady, comforter of the afflicted pray for us and all those depressed and deprived of their rights.”

The Archdiocese of Lagos is also planning to have an anthem and to achieve this, the Archbishop has requested members to forward their wordings of the suggested anthem for consideration at the next Priests’ meeting on 23 September, 2009.
